God-guided, Phone-praying Vow-making Australians

Brent and I spend a morning with Dave and Cathy Cook at Footscray. Before they had their two infants they were volunteers at Lindisfarne’s Open Gate. Dave works for Australia’s Anglican Overseas Aid. They are committed to poverty and service.

We meet up with Joel and Heidi McKerrow at the Wycliffe Bible Translators Centre at Kangaroo Ground. Joel gives me permission to quote from his memorable new book and CD ‘The Wandering Feet’ which you may purchase from www.thepoatinatree.com.au. In order to balance their books the Wycliffe Centre is now being hired out for retreats. Joel hopes to lead several. We swim in the Yarra river. Next day we learn fire hit Kangaroo Ground.

Andy and Nikki Goymer, and children Ethem and Isaac welcome us to supper at Rosanna. Andy is a Voyager with rare contemplative insight. We each light a candle and have five minutes to share what is in our hearts or be silent. Andy becomes the third person to say to me ‘We want you to walk among us’. We skype with Matt in New South Wales. Matt has created a sold basis of trusted relationship among the key members of the Community. We air new ideas that are bubbling up for his discernment, and talk about practicalities, new energies, the web site and the retreat pencilled in for next year.

A two hour flight north to Brisbane and a drive to Judy and Rodd Kennedy’s home at Carboolture. It is named Pilgrim’s Place and is part of the Quiet Garden movement. Judy and I prepare for her vows. I take the draft service and her personal Way of Life into their poustinia for reflection. That night Evening Prayer is said by phone with Heather from Buderim. Next day 22 people gather for Judy's vows, followed by shared meal and evening prayer. I talk with new Explorer Barbara Lumley and Frank who have flown from Sydney. Also with Margaret and Neil Preston and others. It rains.
