The world financial crisis a decade ago produced a reaction against globalism. We lost good as well as bad achievements. We retreated into our bubbles, but these have bad as well as good aspects. Bubbles can burst, because we are not sufficient by ourselves.

Environmental campaigners, like Greta Thonberg, say ‘People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!’

Greta needs to know, we all need to know, that the earth does not belong to us. It is born out of the Divine Word.  The Divine Word is trans global. The Divine Word is trans cosmic. Yet the Divine Word was born as a particular human being in a particular locality. The Divine Word weeps for us, models for us how our lives are meant to be a total self-giving, and can direct us what to do in our present wake-up crisis.

Followers of the Word’s Way (such as Community of Aidan and Hilda followers) heed the Word’s call to live simply that others may simply live, to cherish and be cherished by creation, to heal what is broken, and to live in the eternal rhythms of prayer, works of mercy and re-creation.
