Jubilee

Most people in the world vote for elected Presidents or Heads of State. There are also many unelected Heads of State. A few vote for a constitutional monarch, knowing they can vote in a Government to replace the monarchy any time.

Elizabeth, Queen of the United Kingdom of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and elected Head of the Commonwealth of over fifty nations, is the first monarch in British history to reign for 70 years. Some don’t like her background, or hobbies or accent. She can be accused of making a few misjudgements. Yet never in history has a monarch pledged to serve God and her people for the rest of her life, remained publicly free of prejudiced comments, and put her duties before pleasure, for seventy years.  She dedicated her life to God and public service several years before she became Queen.

A theological dilletante, looking for an argument, once asked her what she thought about sin. ‘I am against it’ she replied. In her broadcasts and elsewhere she has articulated her faith. ‘God sent into the world a unique person, neither a philosopher nor a general (important though they are) – but a Saviour, with the power to forgive. Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian faith. It can heal broken families, it can restore friendships and it can reconcile divided communities. It is in forgiveness that we feel the power of God’s love’. Christmas Broadcast 2011. In her 2014 broadcast she said: 'For me the life of Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace, is an inspiration and anchor in my life. Christ's example had taught me to seek respect and to value all people of whatever faith or none.'

Jesus launched his public ministry with a reading from the prophet Isaiah about Jubilee: it was a time to release prisoners and it was good news for the poor (Luke 4:16-21). Let us deepen this unique seventy year Platinum Jubilee with Jesus’ jubilee elements.
